| Chennai is formerly known as Madras, and it is the capital city of Tamil Nadu. Chennai is the fourth most populous metropolitan area and the fifth most populous city in India. Located on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal, the second largest beach in the world. Mahabalipuram is situated just 60 km off Chennai on the Bay of Bengal coast in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Mahabalipuram art can be divided into four categories: open air bas - relief, structured temples, man-made caves and rathas. Pondicherry situated on the Coromandel Coast, about 160 kms south of Chennai, lies the Union Territory of Pondicherry. The French ruled this territory for 300 years, and today, it stands as a living monument of the French culture in India. Thanjavur District covers an area of 3,396 sq km, and has a population of over 2.2 million. Cauvery is the main river. Agriculture is the major occupation of the people. Paddy, sugarcane, coconut and plantain are the chief crops. Karaikudi is the biggest City in Sivaganga district. Known as the capital of Chettinad, because of the predominance of the "Nattu Kottai Chettiars" who have from here have ventured far and wide to set up their businesses even at the turn of the 20th century. Madurai is one of South India's great temple towns; Madurai is identical with the celebrated Meenakshi Temple.. It was the capital city for the great Pandya kings.The Pandyan King Kulasekarar built a great temple and created a lotus shaped city around the temple. Munnar is a beautiful getaway landscaped with tea plantations, hills, lakes, forests and winding walks. Located at an altitude of 1520 meters above sea level, it is home to South India's highest peak called Anamudi, standing 2,695 meters tall. It is also an important commercial centre in the Idukki district. The economy of Munnar thrives primarily from its vast tea estates and coffee plantations. It is also referred to as the Kashmir of South India, Munnar offers tourists a mix of relaxation and adventure amidst beautiful landscapes. Kochi is formerly known as Cochin - 'Queen of the Arabian' Sea is the commercial capital of Kerala. Cochin has one of the finest natural harbors in the world. It is located in the district of Ernakulam, about 220 kilometers north of the state capital, Thiruvananthapuram. Cochin was once the major center of commerce and trade with the British, Arabs, Chinese, Portuguese, and Dutch etc. It covers area of 87.341 sq. kms. It has the population of 16.6 lakhs, Malayalam is the official language of the state of Kerala. New Delhi is the capital and the third largest city of India. It is a fusion of the ancient and the modern. Standing along the West End of Gangetic Plain, the capital city, Delhi, unwinds a picture rich with culture, architecture and human diversity, deep in history, monuments, museums, galleries, gardens and exotic shows. Comprising of two contrasting yet harmonious parts, the Old Delhi and New Delhi, the city is a travel hub of Northern India. Narrating the city's Mughal past, Old Delhi, takes you through the labyrinthine streets passing through formidable mosques, monuments and forts. Agra is the one of the prominent destinations of the World Tourism map with three heritage monuments -The Taj Mahal, Fatehpur Sikri and Red Fort. It is more just a dacadent city of graveyards and stones Agra is a vibrant centre of Culture, Art and Religious philosphies that have enriched mankind and shaped humen thought over centuries. Agra is famous for handicrafts products such as Inley work on Marvel, Leather work, Footwear, Brasswear, Carpets, Jwellery, Zari and Embroidery work. Rajasthan's beautiful Pink City Jaipur (Founded in AD 1727 by Sawai Jaisingh II,) was the stronghold of a clan of rulers whose three hill forts and series of palaces in the city are important attractions. Western Rajasthan itself forms a convenient circuit, in the heart of the Thar desert which has shaped its history, lifestyles and architecture. Bangalore is unique in many ways. It has the most pleasant weather througout the year which got itself the name "Pensioner's Paradise". Bangalore city is now the nerve centre of industrial activity in the state with the presence of several Public Sector Undertakings. Kapaleeshwarar, the presiding deity of Kapaleeshwarar Temple is a form of Shiva called Kapaleeshwarar. The form of Shiva's wife Parvati at this temple is called Karpagambal. The age of the temple is the source of much debate. Marina Beach, comprising of golden sand, good surf and a shimmering clean blue sea. This beach is counted among one of the longest beaches in Asia. Its 12-km long stretch was made beautiful by the wonderful facelift given by Governor Mountstuart Elphinstone Grant Duff in the early 1880's. Valluvar Kottam is the memorial place to the poet-saint Tiruvalluvar is shaped like a temple chariot and is, in fact, the replica of the temple chariot in Thiruvarur. A life-size statue of the saint has been installed in the chariot which is 33m. Tall. The 133 chapters of his famous work. Thirukkural have been depicted in bas-relief in the front hall corridors of the chariot. The auditorium at Valluvar Kottam is said to be the largest in Asia and can accommodate about 4000 people. It stands as a modern memorial to the great poet who represents the glorious culture of the Tamils. |
